Ghana has a huge undeveloped potential in the field of renewable energy. An estimated 50–100 MW solar energy potential is still untapped in Ghana which requires an investment of US $100–150 million. The wind-energy generation sector is pretty well non-existent, following a government moratorium on renewable energy project permits and power purchase agreements (PPA) due to the country’s excess energy production capacity and commitments to different independent power producers (IPPs).
However, Meinergy has already initiated wind energy production tests on the Akwapim-Togo Mountain ranges in Ghana’s Eastern Region in preparation for adding and harnessing this renewable energy potential to Ghana’s energy production mix.
